Northern Railway has been focusing on movement of essential items, food grain, fertilizer, cement, Petroleum products from the northern states to the rest of the country through the goods trains. The zone has achieved a record Goods loading of 6.03 MT in August 2020. This is a significant increase from 4.2 MT of the same period last year. Moreover the monthly average speed of Goods trains has been improved to 45 Kmph. This is a monumental increase from 25 Kmph average speed of the same period last year.
General Manager Northern & North Central Railways, Sh. Rajiv Chaudhry said that this has been due to the sustained efforts of the zone through its Freight Business development units set up at all divisional levels that such a record foodgrain and fertilizer loading has been achieved in one month.
He further added that Northern Railway has been running special 5000 T Jumbo trains Annapurna, Amba and Antodaya for this purpose since the Covid-19 lockdown period for providing wheat, rice, pulses and sugar to 18 needy states. The foodgrains are being lifted from the producer states; Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and delivered for distribution to the people mainly through the Public Distribution System Ration Shops. Vyapar Mala, special express piecemeal trains and time-tabled parcel trains are being run on a regular basis for movement of limited sized goods.
