7 Bollywood and Hollywood releases to look forward to in July

A juicy new blockbuster is just what the doctor prescribed to liven up the gloomy skies outside, and the box office roster for this month doesn’t disappoint. Kriti Sanon and Diljit Dosanjh make their way to the big screen together for the first time, while Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao’s unfinished business (in Queen) is given a psychotic update under Ekta Kapoor’s watch. The nostalgia continues with Disney set to score another home run with the virtual reality remake of their 1994 classic, ‘The Loin King’. With a busy month ahead of us, here are the dates and the names you’ll want to bookmark.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (Releases July 2, 2019)

If you’ve been looking for a support group to nurse the Tony Stark-shaped hole in your heart after Avengers: Endgame, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is here to give you company. On a road trip to mourn the loss of his mentor, he finds himself recruited by Nick Fury, who is said to play the role of the mean new stepdad as opposed to Stark’s cool uncle vibe. The twenty third movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe also features Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan and Zendaya as Parker’s classmate, among others.

Khandaani Shafakhana (Releases July 26, 2019)

From Vicky Donor (2012) to Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017), Bollywood has never shied away from furthering the conversation around sexology, and Sonakshi Sinha’s newest explores the topic further. Upon turning heir to the family’s dying sex clinic, the movie has her peeling back the layers on the taboo subject when she attempts to bring the local rapper, Gabru onboard—played by Badshah, who makes his acting debut with the movie.

Mental Hai Kya(Releases July 26, 2019)

After the critical and commercial success of Queen (2014), Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao have joined forces again, and on an equal footing this time—the recently released posters of Ekta Kapoor’s erotic black comedy have the duo outbidding each other in the crazy stakes. While one features Ranaut sitting in an overflowing bathtub with a number of hazardous gadgets by her side, another one has Rao stubbing a cigarette on his forehead.

Arjun Patiala(Releases July 26, 2019)

The list of fresh onscreen pairings to be excited for this year includes Kriti Sanon and Diljit Dosanjh, who will be appearing together for the first time in the upcoming spoof comedy, Arjun Patiala. While the former plays the role of a crime journalist, Dosanjh is set to reprise his role as a small town cop from Udta Punjab (2016)—this time, with a comedic twist.

The Lion King(Releases July 19, 2019)

The much-loved classic gets a virtual reality-approved update for the new generation, with Jon Favreau taking the director’s seat for Disney’s latest animation remake. Filmed entirely in virtual reality, the movie follows the age-old tale of the 1994 blockbuster with a star-studded cast headlined by Beyoncé, Donald Glover, James Earl Jones, John Oliver and Keegan-Michael Key, among others.

Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood (Releases July 26, 2019)

The latest from Quentin Tarantino’s stable has already earned rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival 2019 in May, and it is easy to see why.
